Talks in Qatar are testing whether diplomacy can prevent a return to full-scale war.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told followers on Telegram that Washington’s response to specific Iranian questions will determine the final outcome. He stated that Iran prefers diplomacy but remains prepared for defense, contingent on U.S. rationality. Araghchi confirmed that Iranian negotiators met with mediators in Qatar on Saturday regarding a proposal. This plan aims to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours if the United States meets certain conditions. He clarified that no direct negotiations are currently taking place between the two nations.

The diplomatic push coincides with continued violence in Gaza. Israeli airstrikes killed eight people on Sunday. Five died in Khan Younis, according to Nasser Hospital. Three others, including a four-year-old boy, died in Gaza City, where Shifa Hospital also treated a seriously wounded woman. The Israeli military said it targeted militants in both Khan Younis and northern Gaza. A ceasefire established in October 2025 has slowed major fighting but not smaller strikes. Gaza’s Health Ministry reports more than 1,570 deaths since the truce began. The total death toll for the war now exceeds 74,500. The ministry does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. Israel maintains its strikes target militants and accuses Hamas of using civilians as shields.

Tensions also flared in the Red Sea region. Yemen’s Houthi rebels reported two airstrikes on the medical school at the University of Hodeida. They blamed Saudi Arabia for the attacks, though no casualty count was immediately available. The Saudi-led coalition described the action as a precision operation. Hodeida has faced repeated attacks since the civil war re-escalated. In a separate development, the United Nations requested an investigation after Mohammad el Shami died in Houthi custody. El Shami had been held since June 2024. This makes him the second U.N. employee to die in Houthi hands, following a World Food Program worker in February 2025.

Maritime security in the Persian Gulf took a hit as well. Qatar Gas Transport Co. announced that its vessel Al Mayeda was struck by unidentified objects Friday night. The company said the ship sustained damage but remained operational. No crew members were injured, and the company reported no environmental impact. Qatar’s foreign ministry condemned the incident and launched an investigation. Iran has previously claimed attacks on ships and warned against passage through the Strait of Hormuz without its consent. In a parallel move, Iran’s state media reported that Tehran designated the British navy and air force as terrorist organizations. It also labeled the MI6 intelligence service a hostile entity. The Iranian Foreign Ministry accused the United Kingdom of supporting U.S. and Israeli attacks by providing military bases and logistics.

The designation could allow Iranian courts to prosecute individuals accused of working with MI6. It also raises the risk of a direct military confrontation between the two nations.
