Bangkok residents will see the Chao Phraya River fill with a fleet of 52 decorated vessels this Friday. The waterway, typically crowded with ferries and cargo boats, will host a synchronized movement of royal barges for a rare public display. This event marks the culmination of months of preparation by the Thai Navy.

The Royal Barge Procession is tied to the Buddhist Kathin ceremony. This ritual occurs after the end of Buddhist Lent, a three-month rainy season retreat. Monks who stayed in their monasteries during this period receive new robes from the faithful. The procession transports King Maha Vajiralongkorn, Queen Suthida, and other royal family members to the Wat Arun Ratchawararam temple.

Training for the event began in June at a navy dockyard. Approximately 2,200 oarsmen learned to row in unison before moving to the open water in late July. Full dress rehearsals took place twice in late October. These practice runs drew spectators to both banks of the river, offering a preview of the final display.

The rowers must maintain a strict formation of five columns and three lines. They also perform traditional boat songs during the procession. These songs serve a dual purpose. They help coordinate the physical rowing efforts while showcasing Thailand’s cultural heritage. The precision required to keep the fleet aligned is a core part of the training regimen.

The Fine Arts Department has led the restoration of the wooden barges. Workers preserved traditional artistic details while conducting safety inspections and decorative work. The fleet includes four principal royal barges with distinct designs. One features a golden mythical swan on its prow. Others display a multi-headed Naga or the Hindu deity Narayana riding a mythical bird-like creature.

This year’s procession is held during an auspicious year for Queen Suthida. She turned 48 in June, marking the start of her fourth 12-year cycle. The previous procession took place in 2024. That event commemorated the king’s 72nd birthday and his sixth 12-year cycle. The royal family uses these specific milestones to schedule the rare public appearance.
