Tensions in the Middle East have intensified as Washington moves to protect its personnel. The United States has formally warned that Iran is moving closer to executing lethal attacks on Americans stationed overseas, according to new internal reporting.

Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton transmitted a memo to Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The document states that intelligence agencies have observed a significant surge in Iranian efforts to target US citizens. Clayton indicated that specific plots in the region have reached a critical phase of development. Reports from The New York Times suggest these threats extend beyond the Middle East, with potential targets identified in Europe. Some assessments also point to Iranian operatives already operating within the United States. While the administration has kept its public silence, one official confirmed the authenticity of the document to the press. Another official downplayed the immediate danger, noting that Tehran may lack the resources to execute all its planned operations.

The risk level for Americans in the region is now considered the highest since the conflict with Israel began on February 28. This escalation occurs while Washington and its allies consider launching a fresh military campaign following the upcoming mid-term elections. President Donald Trump referenced this possibility on Friday, describing a potential new operation using the codename for the current war.

In response to the heightened threat, the State Department announced on Wednesday that it is withdrawing non-essential employees from its embassy in Saudi Arabia. The department cited increasing Houthi strikes on Saudi infrastructure as a primary factor. Other diplomatic posts in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan, and Lebanon have also seen quiet staff reductions. A US official attributed these moves to both Houthi aggression and Iranian terror plots aimed at US diplomats.

Tehran has not yet issued an official reaction to the memo. However, its leadership has consistently threatened and executed strikes on American and allied bases in the region. The Pentagon confirmed that 21 US service members have died in the area since the war started. On Wednesday, Hossein Mohebbi, a spokesman for the Revolutionary Guard, declared that Iran would shift to an offensive posture if US attacks resume. He claimed that Iranian missiles have improved in quality, range, and power.

Intelligence from Reuters indicates that Tehran has specific plans to target undersea communication cables in the Gulf if fighting escalates again. Mohsen Rezaei, the Iranian security chief, warned that data centers and artificial intelligence facilities could also become targets. This follows a long history of alleged Iranian plots. In March, a Pakistani national was convicted of plotting to assassinate Trump and other politicians on orders from the Revolutionary Guard. In 2022, a Guard member faced charges related to an attempt to kill former national security adviser John Bolton. US intelligence has consistently stated that Iran intends to target US persons globally, particularly those involved in the 2020 killing of Qassem Soleimani.

Security concerns also prompted the US to quickly remove bombers from an airbase in England this month. This decision followed a security incident that led UK authorities to arrest several men suspected of collaborating with Iranian intelligence.
