Abdul El-Sayed and Mike Rogers are competing for the Michigan Senate seat in an election that may decide which party controls the chamber. The Democrat and the Republican are testing different strategies to win over voters in a state that President Donald Trump carried in 2024. The race has drawn more than $100 million in advertising since the August primary.

El-Sayed is running on a progressive platform that emphasizes universal healthcare. He is trying to prove that such an agenda can win in a swing state. The former Wayne County health director defeated Representative Haley Stevens in a costly Democratic primary. He is now seeking to expand his coalition by targeting young voters and disillusioned Republicans in rural areas.

Rogers views this race as a second chance after losing the 2024 contest by fewer than 20,000 votes. The former congressman must win without Trump at the top of the ticket. He is campaigning while high gas prices and other costs weigh on Republican candidates nationally. Rogers has focused on attacking El-Sayed rather than detailing Republican achievements in Congress.

The race has been marked by disputes over Israel and antisemitism. Stevens endorsed Rogers in the final days of the campaign. She said El-Sayed did not do enough to address the concerns of the Jewish community. El-Sayed has been criticized for his comments following a March attack on a Michigan synagogue, where he said, "hurt people hurt people."

Republicans have linked El-Sayed to terrorist organizations, despite a lack of evidence. Trump called him a "jihadist" multiple times. El-Sayed also faced criticism for his association with political streamer Hasan Piker. El-Sayed appeared with Piker during the primary but has since distanced himself from him.

The political environment presents new challenges for both candidates. The war with Iran continues, and Trump has started a trade war with Canada. Rogers, a former House Intelligence Committee chairman, must navigate these issues while staying aligned with Trump. He wrote on social media in September, "The war with Iran needs to end, and end quickly."

No Republican has won a Senate seat in Michigan since 1994. The retirement of Democratic Senator Gary Peters created an opening. Democrats need to gain four seats to take the majority. Losing this seat could put that goal out of reach.
