Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that he does not know whether Vice President JD Vance will seek the Republican nomination for the 2028 presidential election. The President made the remarks at the White House just one day after the midterm elections concluded with a decisive victory for the Democratic Party.
The political landscape shifted sharply on Tuesday when Democrats reclaimed control of both chambers of Congress. This outcome signaled a rejection of the President by voters and immediately opened the race for his successor, as Trump cannot run for a third term under current term limits.
When pressed by reporters about Vance's future, Trump said, "We'll see what happens. We don't know who's going to run. There are a lot of people. Maybe no one will. Maybe he won't run, I don't know." He emphasized that the field of potential candidates remains wide open and unpredictable.
Polls currently identify Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as the leading contenders for the Republican ticket. Neither man has officially announced a campaign, keeping their status as active candidates in a state of flux.
Vance told supporters during the recent campaign that he had not yet made a final decision. He expressed confidence that Trump would back him if he chose to compete. The President later clarified that the two had not spoken specifically about the matter.
