Two Spokane County sheriff’s deputies lost their lives during a tense standoff at a residence in Spangle, Washington, on Tuesday. The incident began when a woman told a neighbor she had been shot by her brother. Officers arrived in the afternoon to check on the family in the small farming community south of Spokane.
Upon arrival, law enforcement confirmed the suspect held a felony warrant. Fearing additional victims were inside, SWAT team members and deputies attempted to breach the front door. Gunfire immediately erupted from the house, striking two officers. Both were transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
One deputy died that night. The second officer was placed on life support on Wednesday, with authorities confirming he was not expected to survive. His organs will be donated. Sheriff John Nowels identified the fallen officers as younger members of the SWAT team. The deceased deputy is survived by his wife and two children.
Other officers returned fire and secured the scene. They found the suspect dead inside the home. Two additional victims were recovered, with one body located in the yard and another inside the residence. The woman who initially reported the shooting was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities have not yet released the names of the suspect or the victims. The sheriff’s office is investigating the specific sequence of events that led to the exchange of fire. A written statement from the office honored the officers for moving toward danger to protect others.
The investigation into the shooting continues. Officials are reviewing details to determine what triggered the initial report and the subsequent breach.
