None of the three candidates running for a seat on the Laredo College Board of Trustees secured a majority of the vote in Tuesday's election. The result sends the contest for Position 9 to a second round of voting next month. This outcome is rare in the city's local elections but standard under the runoff rules for this specific board position.
The race involves incumbent Tita Vela and challenger Dr. Eduardo L. A third candidate was also on the ballot, but neither they nor the two finalists crossed the 50 percent threshold required to win the seat outright on the first pass. The Webb County Elections Office will release the precise vote totals for the primary round in the coming days.
Voters first cast their ballots for this seat in the regular Tuesday election. Because no single candidate received more than half of the votes cast, the law triggers a runoff election. Only the two candidates with the highest vote totals advance to the final decision. This process ensures that the winning candidate has support from at least half of those who vote in the runoff.
The Laredo College Board of Trustees oversees the administration of Laredo College. The Position 9 seat is one of several elected spots that form the governing body. Trustees serve four-year terms and make decisions on budget, hiring, and academic direction for the community college. The vacancy or term expiration for Position 9 was the subject of this November contest.
Tita Vela holds the office currently and is seeking re-election. Dr. Eduardo L. is challenging the incumbent in a race that has drawn attention from local educational stakeholders. Both campaigns have concluded their primary phase activities. Their focus now shifts to the runoff period, which begins immediately following the certification of the primary results.
The runoff election is scheduled for early December. Voters in Laredo will return to the polls to choose between Vela and Dr. L. The specific date will be set by the county election officials. Only these two names will appear on the ballot for Position 9 during that voting event. The other candidates who participated in Tuesday's election are eliminated from the race.
Election officials have confirmed that no majority was reached in the initial count. The certification process is underway to officially declare the top two finishers. Once certified, the runoff schedule will be published to the public. Residents can check the Webb County Elections Office website for the exact date and polling hours for the December vote.
This is the first time in the current cycle that Position 9 has required a runoff. Previous terms for this seat were decided in the general election without a second round. The competitive nature of this year's field, with three active candidates, led to the split in votes. The final decision on who will hold the Position 9 seat now rests solely with the voters who turn out for the December runoff.
