Spain's high-speed rail network faced another deadly incident on Wednesday when two trains collided in central Spain. Authorities confirmed that at least 10 people died when one train struck the rear of another that had stopped on the tracks.

The crash occurred in the province of Toledo, according to the rail system operator ADIF. Two carriages were knocked off the tracks during the impact. The collision halted rail service between Madrid, Ciudad Real, and Andalusia.

Regional spokeswoman Esther Padilla stated that the death toll would likely increase. She identified the two trains as high-speed services traveling from Madrid toward Seville. The RENFE state-owned train carried 397 passengers, while the private IRYO train held 147 people.

Local officials mobilized to handle the injured passengers. Manuel Galán, the mayor of the nearby town of Urda, said civil protection authorities requested that a local sports pavilion be prepared for medical care. Regional president Emiliano García-Page posted on X that he was traveling to the crash site.

This incident follows a major rail disaster in January when a train derailed and hit an oncoming service in southern Spain. That January accident killed 45 people. It was the deadliest rail crash in Spain since 2013, which claimed 80 lives.
