The Roman Catholic Church observed the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed on November 2 with a specific focus on intercessory prayer for those believed to be in purgatory. Pope Leo XIV presided over the central liturgy for this observance, marking the second day of the annual cycle dedicated to the dead.

The Mass took place outdoors at the Campo Verano Cemetery, the largest burial ground in Rome. The site spans more than 200 acres and contains the tombs and monuments that surrounded the congregation. The service occurred as the sun set on an overcast day, creating a specific atmosphere for the ritual.

In his homily, the pope addressed the theological connection between the living and the deceased. He stated that the bond with the faithful departed is not severed but transformed. He explained that prayers for the dead help accompany loved ones toward full communion with the Lord. This communion, he noted, is already tasted in the Sacrament of the Eucharist.

Pope Leo drew from the Gospel of Matthew to address the emotional weight of the day. He highlighted the Beatitude that says blessed are those who mourn for they will be comforted. He specifically asked the faithful to pray for those who recently lost loved ones to the senseless violence of war. He urged that the tears of mothers, children, and the elderly should touch the consciences of those with the power to silence weapons.

Cardinal Baldassare Reina, the vicar general of Rome, concelebrated the Mass alongside the pope. Reina also serves as the parish priest for the Basilica of St. Lawrence Outside the Walls, which is located near the cemetery. The outdoor setting required the clergy and congregation to stand among the burial sites during the liturgy.

The observance of All Souls' Day traditionally involves visiting cemeteries and requesting Masses for the deceased. This practice continues throughout the month of November. For the universal church, this period is designated for specific intercessions for souls in purgatory.

Pope Leo will continue his liturgical schedule for the dead in St. Peter's Basilica. On November 5, the day before his departure for South America, he will celebrate a morning Mass. That service is designated for the cardinals and bishops who have died during the past year.
