San Juan County residents affected by recent floods can now access free curbside debris pickup services provided by the state.
The New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management is partnering with local and county governments to remove flood waste from properties. Residents must place debris at the curb for collection. The state requires waste to be sorted into four specific categories before pickup.
Electronics consist of televisions, computers, and phones. Large appliances include refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves, and dishwashers, and owners must secure or remove their doors. Vegetative debris covers tree branches, leaves, and plants. Construction debris includes drywall, lumber, carpet, and furniture.
Piles must remain clear of overhead trees and powerlines. An eight-foot radius around the pile must stay unobstructed, and debris cannot block rights of way. Those choosing to haul waste independently can find disposal locations on the state agency website. The department advises checking with sites beforehand to confirm accepted materials.
The agency emphasizes that prompt cleanup helps residents return to normal living conditions in damaged homes. Before starting cleanup work, residents should photograph all visible damage. Saving receipts for flood-related expenses is also recommended to assist with future claims.
