One person was killed and five others were wounded in a shooting spree in the northern suburbs of Paris on Friday. The attack, which authorities have labeled as racially motivated and terrorist in nature, left a 12 year old girl seriously injured. The incident occurred in working class communities on the outskirts of the capital that have significant immigrant and Muslim populations.

The violence began around 10:30 am local time. The attacker drove through the towns of Trappes and La Verriere, firing an automatic weapon at a petrol station, a medical center, and a children's playground. The rampage lasted for approximately 15 minutes before police managed to arrest the suspect. He has been identified as Kevin T., a 39 year old man. Investigators found an older style semiautomatic weapon from the World War II era, along with tear gas grenades, in his vehicle.

Local MP Laurent Mazaury stated that the suspect told officers he wanted to kill foreigners. Mazaury described the individual as a racist. The man who died was identified as Pengo Bassio Wangi, a young Black man. Among the injured were a woman wearing a headscarf and the 12 year old girl, who was also wearing a headscarf. The girl, who is of North African descent, was shot eight times and has been moved to a children's hospital for surgery. Prosecutors indicated that three of the five wounded are in critical condition.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed that investigations are ongoing but described the event as clearly a terrorist crime. Prosecutors are looking into whether the suspect conspired with a terrorist group. A member of his immediate family circle has also been taken into custody. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu called the case very serious and noted that all security and judicial resources have been mobilized to handle the situation.

President Emmanuel Macron termed the incident a racist terrorist attack and a turning point for the nation. He emphasized that France remains determined to fight racism in all its forms. Ali Rabeh, the mayor of Trappes who has Moroccan roots, said the gunman fired at random with the goal of causing a bloodbath. He called the attack objectively racist and probably Islamophobic, noting that the victims could easily have been his own relatives. He suggested the wounded girl's crime was likely being of color.

The mother of the injured girl spoke to broadcaster RTL, asking how anyone could do this to a child. She questioned whether her daughter was targeted because of her headscarf and stressed that the girl was born in Trappes and has the right to build her life in France. The attack comes at a time when cost of living and student protests are gripping the country. Authorities plan to deploy 70,000 police officers on Saturday, when more demonstrations are expected.

Political reactions have been swift. Far right National Rally leader Marine Le Pen condemned the shooting as barbaric. However, Muslim groups accused the populist right of fostering hatred through Islamophobic rhetoric. They pointed to Le Pen's proposal to fine women who wear the headscarf in public. Rabeh called politicians who make negative comments about Muslims criminals, while the French Muslim Council blamed promoters of anti Muslim hate speech for having blood on their hands.

Monitors note that anti Muslim hostility is growing more widely. Last week, the European Parliament passed a resolution calling for an EU strategy against Islamist entryism and the Muslim Brotherhood network. Researcher Farid Hafez of Georgetown University's Bridge Initiative called it a major symbolic victory for anti Muslim forces. Amnesty International said in June that Islamophobic violence in the United Kingdom had reached emergency levels. The EU's Fundamental Rights Agency states that one in two Muslims in Europe face racial discrimination. In the US, California's attorney general reported that anti Muslim hate crimes rose 54 percent in 2025.
