Federal prosecutors charged Robin Martin on Tuesday with sending hundreds of letters containing white powder to public officials before the 2024 and 2026 elections.
The FBI stated in a court filing that the substances were identified as yeast or flour, although testing on all mailings is not yet complete. Martin stands accused of conveying a hoax and mailing threatening communications. He was scheduled for his initial court appearance in Oklahoma City on Tuesday afternoon. No attorney was listed in online records to speak on his behalf.
Law enforcement officials disclosed the investigation last month after receiving reports of suspicious substances in mail sent to congressional and election offices across the country. Recipients were advised to treat the packages as potentially hazardous. A message from the Senate Sergeant at Arms indicated that agents were attempting to intercept further mail, but acknowledged that some letters might have reached their intended recipients.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Postal Inspection Service are jointly handling the case. The FBI directed inquiries to the U.S. attorney's office on Tuesday. The Postal Inspection Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.
