Warhound, a new company started by Palmer Luckey, plans to breed dogs genetically modified for military work, according to reports published on 23 October 2026. The startup says its animals will sniff out explosives and help guard troops. Reports say the company has drawn $200 million from backers, a group that includes Sequoia. Colossal Biosciences is reported to handle the cloning and gene-editing steps.

The dog effort sits inside a wider batch of health and security news. Moderna and Merck said their mRNA cancer vaccine cut deaths by 42% and lowered the rate at which melanoma came back in patients. Researchers also said a gene-editing method called prime editing, which rewrites DNA in liver cells, has reached its first human patient.

On the software side, a set of flaws in PHP has not yet produced successful attacks. Experts said the holes are harder to hit than first feared. Officials had asked website operators to patch after the flaws knocked sites offline around the world. One report noted that published fixes can hand hackers a map. Developer Ian Landsman wrote on X that volunteer Ondřej Surý's patching work makes him an unsung hero of the internet. "If anything happens to this guy, that's just it. Everyone is screwed," he said.

Google will pay customers to free up power for its data centers through a virtual power plant that rewards people for changing how and when they use energy. A separate report said the company felled 250,000 trees in Finland for a data center. A Wired report said fossil fuels may have averted the next ice age, with modern warming reversing 2,000 years of ice growth. Scientists also said they recreated solar flares to study why the Sun's corona runs hot.

A Vanity Fair report claimed Dutch spies hacked Jared Kushner's iPhone and alleged financial ties to foreign officials. A Wall Street Journal road trip in what it called America's cheapest electric vehicle found that charging has improved a great deal, with fast chargers keeping the trip workable despite thin coverage.

MIT Technology Review has also released its Impossible issue on six technologies long called imminent, including decoding pet vocalizations, removing forever chemicals from the environment, faster travel to Mars, exercise in a pill and nuclear-powered spaceships.
