Apple has replaced the standard 404 error page on its music website with an interactive replica of the original iPod. The update coincides with the 25th anniversary of the device's October 23, 2001, debut. This digital tribute allows users to engage with the hardware interface directly in a web browser.
The feature was identified by user Kian on X. To access the page, visitors must navigate to music.apple.com/ipod or enter any non-existent path on the domain. Instead of a generic missing content message, the browser renders the classic silver player on screen.
The virtual device is fully functional. Users can click the on-screen buttons to navigate between pre-loaded tracks. The scroll wheel responds to click and drag actions, mimicking the physical turning motion of the original hardware. This interaction requires no additional software or apps.
The digital iPod contains a curated playlist of artists who were popular in 2001. Selecting a song plays a 90-second audio preview directly within the web interface. The tracks are limited to these previews, offering a brief auditory experience rather than full-length playback.
The iPod line has been discontinued for years, making this web-based replica a primary way for fans to revisit the device's design. Apple has not announced new hardware for the anniversary. The page serves as a commemorative element rather than a product launch.
Apple Music currently costs $11.99 per month and is available in the Apple One bundle. The company has not indicated plans to extend the anniversary feature beyond the current web implementation.
