Latvia’s National Armed Forces announced on Saturday, October 24, that they recovered debris from a drone in the Alūksne district.
The military stated the unmanned aerial vehicle most likely crossed into Latvian airspace on October 18. Local authorities first detected the incident when residents reported a noise resembling an explosion. The National Armed Forces and State Police immediately initiated a search for the crash site. Investigators halted that initial operation after two days due to insufficient data to identify the object.
The discovery of the wreckage occurred after a six-day gap in public updates regarding the specific location of the debris. Officials confirmed that no civilians were injured during the incident. Civilian infrastructure sustained no damage, and authorities have not identified any further immediate threats.
An internal review is currently underway to assess how the incident unfolded. This investigation aims to determine the factors that allowed the drone to enter the country and why the initial search failed to locate the site promptly. The military stressed that the search resumed once new information became available.
The event follows a similar airspace violation in neighboring Lithuania. On October 18, Lithuanian officials found the wreckage of a suspected drone in the village of Juodžionys, in the Pasvalys district. Lithuania determined the drone entered its airspace from Poland. Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius stated that the Lithuanian drone contained explosives. Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesman for Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, suggested the Lithuanian incident resulted from Russian electronic warfare measures. Ukraine expressed regret over the event.
Latvian authorities continue to analyze the recovered debris to confirm the drone's origin and purpose.
