The security response in Hebron has escalated dramatically following a deadly ambush that claimed the lives of two Israeli soldiers. The tension peaked on Friday when gunmen opened fire at Yehuda Junction, killing St.-Sgt. Ron Yonatan Roytman and Sgt. Yuval Shai Svilem. By Saturday, the military had moved from a reactive posture to an aggressive offensive, tearing down illegal structures near the northern entrance of the city to clear potential cover and restore order.

The timeline of the crisis unfolded rapidly over the last forty-eight hours. The initial shooting on Friday prompted an immediate assessment by Central Command officials. They identified the attackers as Hamouda and Firas al-Ja'aba, both linked to Hamas. Intelligence indicated the two men operated out of the Ein Dir-Baha neighborhood. In the evening, authorities announced the evacuation of the densely populated al-Jalda and Ein Dir-Baha districts to facilitate a thorough sweep of the area.

The operation is now a massive joint effort led by the Judea Brigade. It draws on specialized forces including the Duvdevan and Maglan units, the Paratroopers Brigade, and Givati reconnaissance reservists. Border Police officers are also on the ground, supported by intelligence guidance from the Shin Bet security agency. This coordinated approach signals a shift toward a comprehensive counterterrorism campaign rather than a localized incident response.

Military personnel have already combed through approximately 200 locations. These searches aimed to eliminate weapons caches and terrorist infrastructure. So far, ten suspects have been taken into custody. The demolitions carried out on Saturday were executed close to the site of the fatal shooting. Officials stated that removing these illegal buildings is crucial for enforcing law and order while removing physical threats that could harbor future attacks.

Assessments suggest that roughly 2,000 residents in the affected zone belong to the Ja'aba clan. This group has ties to Hamas and is the origin point for the shooters. The area is recognized by the security establishment as a key hub for Hamas activity in Hebron. Evacuating civilians allows troops and intelligence agents to inspect homes, family compounds, and surrounding areas for explosives labs and ammunition without risking bystanders. Those who wished to leave were allowed to pass through checkpoints managed jointly by the Shin Bet and the IDF.

A critical situational assessment is scheduled for Saturday to decide if the operation will expand further. In the meantime, Brig.-Gen. Kobi Heller, who commands the West Bank Division, has already widened the net. He has ordered increased searches and arrests in Nablus, Jenin, and Tulkarm, along with other sites in Samaria. This broader crackdown occurs against a backdrop of heightened concern. Security leaders believe Hamas leadership abroad is attempting to coordinate new attacks in the lead-up to upcoming elections.
