Democrat Chris Coons retained his seat in the United States Senate on Tuesday, November 3, following a contested election in Delaware.

The Associated Press called the race for Coons when 44% of the total votes had been counted. The tally showed Coons with 99,638 votes, representing 67% of the total, while Republican Michael Katz received 48,791 votes, or 32%.

Coons has served as Delaware's senior senator since 2010, initially winning a special election to fill the seat vacated by former President Joe Biden. He was subsequently re-elected in 2014 and 2020. An attorney by training, Coons holds undergraduate degrees in chemistry and political science from Amherst College, along with graduate degrees from Yale Divinity School and Yale Law School.

Before entering the U.S. Senate, Coons served as President of the New Castle County Council from 2001 to 2005 and as the New Castle County Executive from 2005 until his federal election. His legislative work has focused on international trade, manufacturing innovation, and foreign relations. He has served on the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Foreign Relations Committee, and the Appropriations Committee, and acted as Vice Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Ethics.

Coons' campaign platform outlined goals to strengthen foreign alliances, expand national service programs, and address climate change through market-based innovation. He also advocated for comprehensive immigration reform and judicial appointments that protect civil rights and reproductive freedoms, according to his campaign website.

His opponent, Michael Katz, is a physician who specialized in anesthesiology and pain management. Katz served in the Delaware State Senate representing District 4 starting in 2008. He originally won that seat as a Democrat but shifted toward conservative principles regarding fiscal responsibility and individual liberty. He left the Democratic Party in 2023, ran as an Independent in 2024, and registered as a Republican in 2026 to seek the party's nomination.

Katz aligned his campaign with President Donald Trump's economic policies and border security proposals, though he did not receive a direct official endorsement from the President. Katz's campaign website described him as a candidate who spent 30 years in Delaware treating patients and filing legislation, stating he is ready to fight for Delawareans in Washington by finding common ground.

Katz continued his medical practice in Delaware during his political career, focusing on healthcare policy and regulatory reform. His platforms centered on reducing state spending, streamlining government regulations, and improving the state's business climate. He also sought to reform Delaware's healthcare system by using free-market dynamics to lower costs.

Coons resides in Wilmington with his wife, Annie, and their three children. Katz is also based in Wilmington, where he remains active in community health initiatives and regional civic affairs.

The election result confirms Coons for another term in the Senate, while Katz continues his medical practice and civic work in Delaware.
