Manchester United supporters directed chants toward ownership and executives during Sunday's match, a reaction that followed a 3-0 defeat to AFC Bournemouth. The result marked the third time in two years that Bournemouth defeated United by the same 3-0 scoreline at Old Trafford.

Prior to the last two years, Bournemouth had won three matches against Manchester United across the 74 years since the clubs first met in the 1949 FA Cup third round. Bournemouth has now won three matches against United in two years, all at Old Trafford, all by a 3-0 score.

Michael Carrick, whom the article refers to as the soon to be former Manchester United manager, addressed the team's performance following a 4-1 defeat in Como. Carrick guided United to a third-place finish and Champions League qualification. He is 45 years old and previously spent three seasons at Middlesbrough.

In February 2024, Sir Jim Ratcliffe invested $1.6 billion for approximately one quarter of the club, giving INEOS Group control of football operations at Old Trafford. During INEOS's period running the club, United rank ninth in the Premier League for points and 10th for expected goal difference.

Under INEOS management, the club canvassed the market for a replacement for Erik ten Hag, triggered an extension clause in his contract, spent over $400 million on players for him, and dismissed him within four months. The club then hired Ruben Amorim, who finished 15th, and later dismissed him before bringing in Carrick. Sporting director Jason Wilcox spent nearly $200 million on midfielders Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba, and the left back position was left unaddressed.

Manchester United's actual goal difference stood at minus-one while the expected goal difference was a shade under plus four, reflecting a gap between performance and underlying metrics. The club sat 16th in the table, one point above the relegation zone.

Harry Maguire spoke after Sunday's 3-0 loss to Bournemouth, stating, "At the moment it's nowhere near good enough and something needs to change." The starting back four for United in the 4-0 loss to Brentford in August 2022 consisted of Diego Dalot, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw. The same four players started in draws against Fulham and Everton more than four years later.

Malcolm Glazer loaded debt onto Manchester United to fund his purchase of the club more than two decades ago. The Glazers have owned Manchester United during the period described in the article.

During Sunday's match, chants of "It's Carrick you know" sounded around Old Trafford until Carrick departed down the tunnel.
