Sedona city officials reported that 2,700 gallons of sewage entered Oak Creek on Sunday morning. The spill occurred at approximately 9:45 a.m. near Bear Wallow Lane.
According to the city, the Bear Wallow Pump Station failed to manage the volume of water during a period of heavy rainfall. The pumps could not keep pace with the incoming flow, resulting in the overflow into the creek.
This event marks the second major discharge into Oak Creek in seven days. Last Sunday, between 1,000 and 5,000 gallons of untreated wastewater entered the waterway. Officials stated that a grease clog at a restaurant caused that incident, which was contained within two hours and disinfected.
On Sunday, pumper trucks arrived to assist the local infrastructure. Normal operations at the pump station resumed by 11:15 a.m.
City representatives said they did not notify local residents of the new spill because active evacuations were already underway in the area. Water quality sampling has not yet taken place due to current safety concerns.
The creek remains a focal point for cleanup efforts as the city works to assess the impact of the two consecutive spills.
