Redfin is attempting to solve a logistical headache for home buyers by mapping local childcare options directly onto property listings. The company launched this feature in partnership with Winnie, a national online marketplace for early care and education. The tool provides visibility into nearby programs for families weighing the costs of housing and child care simultaneously.
Daryl Fairweather, chief economist at Redfin, stated that home searches often coincide with family changes, such as weddings or new children. He noted that knowing available childcare helps buyers calculate their true affordability before committing to a mortgage. The integration became available on Redfin’s mobile applications for iOS and Android at the end of September, according to Isabelle Novak, a spokesperson for the real estate company.
The feature displays data from more than 250,000 licensed early care and education programs nationwide. On desktop and mobile sites, buyers scrolling a listing will see a 'Preschool & daycare' tab alongside the existing 'K-12' option from GreatSchools. Selecting the childcare tab reveals up to five nearby providers. This includes licensed center-based, home-based, and school-based programs, along with the ages each serves and the distance from the property.
Clicking a provider name opens a pop-up with details such as the provider’s website, hours, address, and financial assistance options. It also shows any published parent reviews. Sara Mauskopf, CEO and co-founder of Winnie, explained that buyers can click through to the Winnie website for deeper information, such as tuition rates and available slots. Winnie builds these profiles from public state licensing databases, and about a quarter of the 250,000 provider pages have been claimed by the operators themselves.
Mauskopf described the partnership as critical for families who view childcare as a necessity rather than a luxury. She recalled her own experience moving with three children, where she and her husband had to scramble for care at the last minute. She warned that some affordable neighborhoods are 'childcare deserts' with few or no licensed programs. The feature helps identify these gaps before a purchase is finalized.
The tool only shows providers within a 10-mile radius of the property address. If no programs exist in that range, a message indicates that no options were found. A key missing element is often the cost, as many programs still require a tour before sharing prices. Mauskopf noted that a shift is occurring, with more providers posting tuition online because families are increasingly using AI tools to compare rates. She hopes this trend will allow the Redfin integration to display full cost data in the future.
