A deaf construction crew in Los Angeles replaced all stolen equipment within days after neighbors and online donors chipped in for the loss.

The theft occurred during a storm repair job at a private home. Thieves pulled up to the site and took batteries, blades, a leaf blower, and several power tools while the workers were inside. The total value of the missing gear was in the thousands of dollars. Michael Litberg of Neverless Construction described the loss as a direct hit to the crew's livelihood.

Jan Menapace, the homeowner, first noticed the discrepancy when the workers came down from the roof for a break. She observed the men signing to each other and looking around the site. When she asked what was missing, they indicated their tools had disappeared. Menapace checked the home's security footage and identified two suspects who had driven up to the workspace.

The crew's situation resonated with local residents. Menapace launched an online fundraiser to cover the cost of new equipment. The campaign drew immediate attention, and people began dropping off lunch for the workers at the site. Others called to arrange meetings at Home Depot to purchase specific tools directly. The public response allowed the team to restock their inventory quickly so they could finish the roof repair without delay.

Litberg expressed gratitude for the support that enabled the crew to return to work. He noted that the experience reinforced the value of community assistance for specialized trades. Looking ahead, the company aims to use this momentum to train other deaf workers who are seeking employment in the construction industry.

The incident highlighted the specific challenges faced by crews that rely on non-verbal communication during high-pressure jobs. The rapid replacement of the stolen items ensured the project stayed on schedule. The crew completed the repair for Menapace's home after the new tools arrived.
