Jalen Williams will undergo surgery for a fractured fibula and a dislocated left ankle, according to Oklahoma City Thunder general manager Sam Presti. Presti informed reporters on Monday that the 25-year-old guard requires the procedure to address the injuries sustained during Sunday night's game against the Los Angeles Clippers. While an exact return date remains pending until the medical team evaluates him post-operatively, ESPN has reported that the injury could effectively end his season.
The injury occurred with approximately one minute remaining in the fourth quarter of a 108-101 Thunder victory. Williams drove to the basket for a dunk and was sandwiched in mid-air by Clippers defenders Kris Dunn and Derrick Jones Jr. He lost his balance, and upon landing, his left leg became trapped beneath his body weight, causing the visible fracture. The Thunder training staff applied towels and an air cast before wheeling him off the court on a stretcher.
Presti also announced that Thunder guard Cason Wallace will undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder. Wallace sustained that injury during the same game on Sunday. Like Williams, Wallace could be sidelined for the remainder of the season, though the team has not released an official timeline for his recovery.
Thunder coach Mark Daigneault described the situation as difficult for the roster. "We're not doing great," Daigneault said. "That's tough on the guys." Teammate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander expressed concern for his teammate after the game, stating, "I just feel bad for him. Nothing more than that."
Williams emerged as a key player in 2025, earning All-NBA Third Team and All-Defensive Second Team honors while helping the Thunder secure their first championship since relocating to Oklahoma City. He averaged 23.6 points during the 2025 Finals. His previous season was disrupted by recurring hamstring issues, which caused him to miss significant portions of the regular season and playoffs.
The Thunder entered this season as preseason favorites, having retained their core group after trading Lu Dort to the Atlanta Hawks. Williams was averaging 13.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game before Sunday. The team had started the season with three wins. Wallace, a fourth-year guard who earned All-Defense Second Team honors last season, had started in all three games this season before his shoulder injury.
The severity of Williams' injury has drawn comparisons to Gordon Hayward's opening night injury with the Boston Celtics in 2017. Hayward suffered a dislocated left ankle and fractured left tibia, missing the rest of that season. He played 318 additional games over the next six years before retiring at age 33.
