The Federal Bureau of Investigation has identified a growing domestic terrorism threat that recruits children through popular online video games.

These groups, known as Nihilistic Violent Extremists or NVEs, first appeared in records in 2021. The FBI describes them as a rising threat that seeks to sow chaos and destroy society.

FBI Director Kash Patel stated that the agency currently has 1,700 domestic terrorism investigations open in the United States. He noted that a large portion of these cases involve NVE activity.

Special Agent Heith Janke explained that these actors are motivated by a deep hatred for societal values. Janke said the goal is generally to cause destruction in communities.

The threat is not abstract for families in the Midwest. Amy Ramsey, a supervisory Special Agent with the FBI in Kansas City, confirmed a rise in NVE activity across the region.

Ramsey said the predators operate on both sides of the state line. They specifically target youth between the ages of 11 and 18 who may lack strong family or social support.

While both boys and girls are targeted, Ramsey said the victims are predominantly female. The process begins with building rapport in a benign way before moving victims to encrypted platforms.

Unlike traditional online predators who seek sexual gratification or money, NVEs aim for extreme outcomes. Ramsey described the end goal as a victim committing suicide or an act of mass violence.

The behavior often escalates quickly with what agents call blood signs. These include writing names in blood on notebooks or walls, or showing violence toward siblings and pets.

A deadly shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego on May 18 is currently under investigation for NVE connections. Two teens opened fire on the mosque, killing three people while livestreaming the attack before taking their own lives.

The FBI said the young gunmen were radicalized online. Agents believe the shooters were motivated by the same nihilistic violent extremism seen in other NVE cases.

Ramsey advised parents to monitor the apps and games their children use. She urged families to look at the content on devices rather than just restricting access and forgetting about it.
