The Netherlands will not compete in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest. The Dutch public broadcasting organization NPO announced the withdrawal on Tuesday, marking a reversal of a commitment made last month to return to the competition.

The decision follows a period of uncertainty within the Dutch media sector. In 2026, the country boycotted the contest after the commercial network Avrotros withdrew. Although Avrotros confirmed it would also sit out the 2027 edition, NPO initially stepped in to ensure a Dutch presence. That plan has now collapsed.

NPO media director Jurre Bosman cited social friction as the primary driver. He stated that Israel's participation elicits various reactions in society and causes discussion and division. Because of this, NPO has decided to forgo participation in 2027. The organization will still air the broadcast for domestic viewers.

Chair Jet de Ranitz detailed the internal process that led to the exit. De Ranitz said the organization held discussions with broadcasters and initially felt there was sufficient support to return. However, the group was unable to find a suitable format for the show. De Ranitz concluded that it is currently too early to participate and that the organization must take a step back for the time being due to sensitivities surrounding the current themes.

Eurovision director Martin Green responded to the news on Tuesday. He said he was deeply sorry for the decision but respected the strength of feeling behind it. Green noted that opinions about the contest differ widely both within and between countries. He maintained that the contest matters in a divided world and represents a moment of unity around music and creativity.

The Netherlands is not alone in its 2027 absence. Ireland has also confirmed it will not take part, and the head of the Spanish public broadcaster supports a boycott. The Czech public broadcaster has pulled out, though it cited spending cuts rather than political issues. These withdrawals follow a 2026 boycott by the Netherlands, Iceland, Spain, Ireland, and Slovenia over Israel's participation amid criticism of military actions in Gaza.

Organizers have introduced changes to address divisions, including rules to exclude countries involved in armed conflict from hosting and adjustments to the voting system. The 2027 contest is scheduled for 15 May in Burgas, Bulgaria. The venue was selected following the win by Dara in Vienna this year with the track Bangaranga.
