Nebraska football fans are watching their team lose three consecutive games by narrow margins. The Huskers fell to Washington 17-10 on Saturday. This result marks the third time in a row that the team has dropped a contest it had a chance to win. The frustration among the fan base is growing as the season winds down.

Clester Johnson, a national championship-winning wingback, spoke about the team's recent struggles on the Common Fan Podcast. Johnson played under head coach Tom Osborne and believes the current issues go deeper than a few bad plays. He argues that the problems stem from a lack of consistent execution and leadership. The team has failed to establish a reliable running game. Players have also missed key opportunities when the momentum shifted in the final minutes.

Johnson points to a disconnect between the coaching staff and the players. He says coaches must put athletes in positions to succeed. However, he also believes the players need to step up their game. He recalls the culture built during the 1990s, which was defined by unity, respect, and strict accountability. He questions if today's roster can develop that same mentality before the season ends. The team needs to eliminate mistakes in practice to perform better on game day.

Head coach Matt Rhule has also come under scrutiny. His emotional press conference following the Washington loss generated controversy. Rhule discussed an incident where a fan verbally confronted his daughter. The podcast hosts agreed that targeting a coach's family is unacceptable. Yet, they debated if Rhule's public comments shifted focus away from the team's on-field struggles. Some fans feel the relationship between the staff and the crowd is beginning to fracture.

Despite the recent losses, Johnson remains optimistic. He believes Nebraska has enough talent to compete with any team on its schedule. The issue is not a lack of physical ability or effort. It is the inability to make critical plays when the game is on the line. He sees the recurring fourth-quarter struggles as a psychological hurdle as much as a football one. The team must find a way to close out games effectively.

The Huskers have four games left in the season. Johnson sees Friday night's trip to Illinois as a pivotal moment. A win against Illinois could help rebuild confidence and create momentum for the final stretch. A loss might push the program closer to a breaking point. Johnson tells fans it is okay to be frustrated and demand better. As long as the players are still fighting, he believes there is reason to keep supporting the team.
