The Italian government has assigned 500 soldiers to Milan to secure the city ahead of demonstrations scheduled for Saturday. These rallies are planned across eight cities in response to rising living costs and opposition to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's right-wing leadership. The new protests follow clashes and looting in Milan one week prior.

A newly formed organization called the October 17 Movement, working with student groups and labor unions, announced the events online. The group expressed distrust of the government, describing it as authoritarian. Organizers have kept the specific locations secret to avoid police anticipation. They plan to reveal three meeting points on social media accounts on Saturday afternoon.

Police conducted raids and searches in several cities on Friday to target suspects involved in recent unrest. Adnkronos reported that officers carried out an additional 150 raids in the Lombardy region on Saturday morning. Police told Al Jazeera that they have located and are questioning the administrator of the movement's Instagram page. According to the Corriere della Sera, the suspect is a 30-year-old freelance journalist and researcher of Italian and Moroccan descent who faces investigation for inciting crimes.

The movement emphasized a desire for peaceful dissent. A participant identified as E stated on Thursday that the group must remain calm to prevent police from charging them. Another member, identified as Q, argued that there was no meaningful distinction between violent and peaceful protesters, stating simply that it was just them. The group sought to project unity despite the recent turbulence.

Data from the previous day's arrests reveals a young demographic. Of the 271 people detained, 220 were under the age of 18. The Corriere della Sera reported that some minors joined the event after being added to a Telegram group without their explicit consent. One detainee claimed the group promised they could acquire goods by creating chaos. Lawyer Michele D'Agostino, who represents two of the demonstrators, said the 15-year-old client did not understand the protest's goals and had only seen it on TikTok.

Public officials have addressed the surge in youth arrests. The public prosecutor blamed social media for encouraging young people to commit what he called insurrectional acts. Justice Minister Carlo Nordio told Sky TG24 that Italy must expand the capacity of its youth detention facilities. In a separate development, truck drivers blocked roads in southern Italy earlier this week to protest high fuel prices. The government responded on Thursday by granting tax breaks and creating a special fund for farmers and fishermen.
