The House Committee on Administration is sending its largest observer team to date to the November 3 midterm elections.

Rep. Bryan Steil, the Wisconsin Republican who chairs the panel, told Fox News Digital that the deployment includes dozens of staffers assigned to districts where House races are expected to be tight. He called the effort the most robust program the House has ever executed, noting that the balance of power in the chamber is at stake.

The committee has run an annual election watcher program for several cycles, using it to add oversight in competitive districts and to prepare legal challenges if irregularities surface. Steil said the current scale reflects the number of close races anticipated this year. He noted that the length of the assignment varies by state election laws.

Observers in jurisdictions with efficient processes, such as Florida, may finish their shifts early in the evening. In states with policies that delay tabulation, like California, shifts can last for days. Steil recounted a visit to Los Angeles County in 2024, where he watched ballots arrive at a central counting location days after polls closed because the state allows mail ballots to arrive after Election Day.

In Milwaukee, a tabulation issue during the 2024 cycle led to the recount of thousands of ballots. Steil said his team’s observers will record what occurs at polling locations and verify that rules are followed. These staffers are federally protected under the Confirmation of Congressional Observer Access Act, which Congress enacted in 2024.

The program is open to any House staffer except interns. Steil said the observers will be in direct contact with the committee on Election Day. This communication line allows the committee to deploy additional resources or initiate court challenges if problems are identified. He described the observers as the first step in identifying issues and notifying the team to begin work immediately.

Democrats are permitted to run their own observer program under the same law, but they do not coordinate their efforts with Republicans. The House Republicans aim to have eyes and ears on the ground in close races across the country to ensure the elections are run freely and fairly.
