Arsenal defeated Liverpool 1-0 on Sunday to take a three-point lead at the top of the Premier League table. The result marks the first time the Gunners have won at Anfield in a league match since 2012.
Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the match in the 16th minute. The strike proved decisive in a tightly contested game that saw Liverpool fail to register a single shot on target in their own stadium, a first in Premier League history for the hosts.
Mikel Arteta described the performance as historic. He noted that his players embraced the challenge of overcoming a long-standing psychological barrier. "[They are] just loving the mission," Arteta said. "And the mission was something that we didn't accomplish in 14 years."
The victory comes after a difficult period for the visitors. Arsenal lost eight of their previous 13 league games and had kept just one clean sheet in 27 prior league visits to Anfield. They also suffered a midweek Carabao Cup exit against League Two side Fleetwood Town.
Arteta credited the team's resilience following the cup defeat. He said the players had to "pick yourself up" after the loss to Fleetwood. "It looks like, 'yeah, what are we doing?' And then you have to pick yourself up and understand that this is a beautiful part of this game," he added.
The win extends Arsenal's recent Premier League record to eight wins and one loss from nine matches. Liverpool applied heavy pressure after falling behind, but Arsenal maintained control in the second half to preserve the narrow advantage.
