Cade Mower has secured a position in the next round of 'The Voice' following a controversial episode that aired on October 27. The 35-year-old singer from Bluffdale, Utah, received an automatic bid to the live shows after his coach, country musician Riley Green, selected him during the Battle round. This decision came despite Mower's own assessment that his performance was flawed.
Mower told the Deseret News via a Zoom call from his car that he was 'very, very upset' with his rendition of 'Wondering Why' by the Red Clay Strays. He performed the song as a duet with fellow contestant Brayden Howell. While Clarkson described his vocals as 'insane' during the broadcast, Mower felt the arrangement did not suit his vocal range. The show's producers lowered the key to accommodate both singers, a change Mower said prevented him from showcasing his strongest notes.
The singer admitted to making last-minute adjustments to his parts, a gamble he now regrets. He noted that filming often involves stop-and-go recording, which can disrupt an artist's adrenaline. Mower stated he entered his first note earlier than intended, which triggered a chain reaction of disappointments. He described the experience as a battle with himself rather than with Howell, whom he viewed as a collaborator.
Surviving 'Cut Week' is a major milestone for Mower. This period of the competition eliminated half of the remaining contestants, reducing the field from 28 to 12. A 13th contestant will be added next week based on viewer voting. Mower returns to the stage on Monday for a performance he calls a 'chance at redemption.' He aims to return to his natural style, avoiding the vocal acrobatics he felt he attempted during the Battle round.
The singer, who has performed in bars for 15 years, emphasized the importance of authenticity. He said, 'I know what I am, I know what I'm not.' He believes his portrayal on the show remains true to his identity as an artist. Mower, who met his wife Lindsey in Austin, Texas, has balanced his competition with fatherhood and a finance job. He noted that spending two months away from his two young children in Los Angeles was emotionally taxing but helped him become more present when home.
His audition clip has gained over 3 million views on YouTube, making him a strong contender for the title. Mower, a graduate of Riverton High School and Utah State University, started playing at his uncle's bar, Club 48, in Murray. He recalled earning $50 a night while learning the craft. The exposure from the show has led to new industry introductions and increased his passion for his career.
Mower is now preparing for the live shows with the support of his family and fans in Utah. He plans to continue performing 'Wondering Why' in his regular setlist despite his mixed feelings about the TV performance. His journey from a bar musician in Murray to a national competition finalist illustrates the personal and professional challenges of pursuing a music career on television.
The next episode airs on Monday, where Mower will attempt to solidify his place in the competition. He remains focused on delivering a performance that feels genuine to his style. The show continues to narrow its field as it moves toward the final rounds, with viewer voting playing a role in determining the next contestant to join the group.
