Marshawn Cherry will not return to Mission Bay High School for the 2026-27 boys basketball season. A district source confirmed that the coach's contract was not renewed after a decade at the helm. The school is currently searching for a replacement to lead the program.

Cherry guided the Buccaneers to a 189-110 record during his time with the school. His tenure included two CIF San Diego Section championships, with the team claiming the Open Division title in 2018 and the Division 1 title in 2024. His roster featured several players who advanced to collegiate ball, including Boogie Ellis at USC, Justin Moore at Georgia Tech, and Clay Grebing, who is currently playing at Point Loma Nazarene.

The Buccaneers are scheduled to open their season on Nov. 19 with a matchup against Tri-City Christian. The new coaching staff will be in place before that opening game.

In a separate hiring move, Scripps Ranch High School named Alissa Murphy Richardson as its new girls basketball coach. Richardson is the most decorated player in the school's basketball history. She played for the Falcons from 1993 to 1996 and led the state of California in scoring during her sophomore year. As a senior, she helped the team secure a CIF San Diego Section title.

Richardson continued her playing career at Boston College, where she appeared in the NCAA Tournament twice. She also played professionally in Israel, France, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand. The school has retired her jersey, and Boston College inducted her into its Varsity Club Hall of Fame. The Falcons will begin their season on Nov. 17 with a tournament game against Oceanside.

The public may nominate local high school football players for the Dr Pepper Most Inspirational Award. The award recognizes players who serve as examples to their teammates through their presence and actions. The winner will receive a scholarship during an on-field ceremony at the Holiday Bowl.

The ceremony will take place on Dec. 28 at Snapdragon Stadium. Nominees must submit entries via the holidaybowl.com website by Nov. 13.
