Mbappe's 22 World Cup goals anchor trophyless Ballon d'Or bid

Kylian Mbappe will argue for the Ballon d'Or this Monday in London based on a record-setting scoring campaign, even though he did not win a single trophy during the 2025-26 season. The French striker is not the favorite according to bookmakers, but he points to individual milestones to justify a place in the top spots.
The central fact in Mbappe's case is his performance at the 2026 World Cup in North America. He won the Golden Boot and finished as the all-time leading scorer in the tournament's history with 22 goals in 22 matches. This total surpasses Lionel Messi, who is second with 21, and Miroslav Klose, who is third with 16. Mbappe stated that overtaking historical legends in the most important tournament is a standout achievement.
His club statistics support this individual dominance. At Real Madrid, Mbappe scored 25 goals to become La Liga's top scorer. He also netted 15 goals in the Champions League, leading the scoring charts in that competition. He noted that being the top scorer in all major competitions makes for a strong case for the award.
The primary weakness in his bid is the absence of silverware. Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and were eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. This marked a second consecutive season without a major club trophy. On the international stage, France placed fourth at the World Cup after losing to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place playoff.
Competitors for the award have stronger trophy records. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Harry Kane of Bayern Munich won three trophies, including the Bundesliga title. Despite this, Mbappe told RFI that the award goes to a player, not a team, and that individual eye-catching moments are what matter most. Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho also backed his player, noting that Mbappe made history this summer.
Historical context suggests this path is difficult. In the last decade, every Ballon d'Or winner lifted at least one trophy during the relevant season. Ousmane Dembele won in 2025 after helping PSG win the Champions League, while Rodri won in 2023 after winning Euro 2024 and the Premier League. The last player to win without a major trophy was Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013, who scored 66 goals while his teams finished as runners-up in domestic leagues.
Mbappe has been nominated nine times and finished third in 2023. He remains in the conversation for the award, relying on the rarity of his 22-goal World Cup record to overcome the lack of a team title.
