Israeli ground forces moved into the Ein Deir Baha district of Hebron to systematically dismantle a residential zone, an action that has forced nearly 1,500 people from their homes. Local officials state that this sweeping clearance serves as a retaliatory measure following a deadly ambush on a military outpost located just outside the city limits. The operation has resulted in the total erasure of several urban blocks, leaving a vast landscape of rubble and debris.

City authorities estimated that 35 hectares of land were either destroyed or designated for demolition by Saturday afternoon. The city, which hosts a population of 250,000, was placed under a strict lockdown with checkpoints established at every entry point. Visual records captured by residents revealed the scale of the damage. Footage showed soldiers marking structures with black crosses, heavy machinery tearing down stone walls, and a large apartment complex flying the national flag. Locals identified that building as the temporary base for a military command post, a property previously owned by a prominent local family.

The destruction follows a violent clash that occurred on Friday. Two armed men attacked an Israeli military checkpoint, engaging troops in a firefight that lasted roughly twenty minutes. The confrontation left two soldiers dead and three others injured, while both attackers were also killed. Because the gunmen were believed to be from the Ein Deir Baha area, the military targeted that specific district for the subsequent clearance operation.

Political leaders are leveraging the incident with the national vote scheduled for four days from now. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich inspected the checkpoint site and vowed a rapid and intense counterattack. Netanyahu declared that the state would act to destroy the location. Smotrich, who is running for office with a smaller coalition group, appeared on camera wearing body armor while a nearby building was demolished. He announced orders to remove a row of structures deemed illegal and called for a broad military offensive similar to previous campaigns in Gaza and Lebanon.

Local civil rights groups are criticizing the severity of the response. Issa Amro, an activist based in Hebron, described the situation as a form of collective penalty for actions that the general population did not commit or endorse. He noted that his own sister’s family was among the displaced. Amro questioned whether the current destruction is purely for political gain or part of a longer strategy to be implemented after the ballot count. A municipality spokesperson confirmed that roughly 300 families have been evicted so far, with many seeking refuge with extended family or in community centers. The Wafa news agency reported that plans are underway to relocate another 2,500 residents in the coming days.

The military has been contacted for a statement regarding the extent of the demolition and the visual evidence of the widespread destruction. The next few days will likely bring further political maneuvering as candidates use the crisis to define their security platforms. Residents remain uncertain about their next steps, with many staying in temporary shelters while officials continue to assess the long-term status of the cleared district.
