Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth removed Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia from his role as the top military planner at the Pentagon on Wednesday. Sylvia served as the director of strategy, plans, and policy on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a position known in military circles as J5. The defense official who confirmed the news spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive personnel matters. No immediate replacement has been named for the post.

The firing marks the second time Hegseth has removed a general from the J5 seat. His predecessor, Lt. Gen. Joseph McGee, was forced to retire in October of last year. The Pentagon has not provided a public reason for Sylvia's departure. The move was first reported by The Atlantic. A spokesperson for the Joint Staff sent a statement thanking Sylvia and his family for their 32 years of service. The statement wished him and his family the best.

Sylvia's removal occurs while President Donald Trump weighs options for renewed military strikes against Iran. The conflict has continued for eight months since the war began with Israel. Trump has stated that new strikes are an option following the midterm elections scheduled for next week. He has vowed to finish the job in Iran. Two diplomats briefed on the matter said U.S. officials have told several Middle East countries and regional allies to prepare for potential renewed military action. They also advised allies to be ready for the possibility that Iran will attempt to retaliate against them. Trump has not yet made a final decision on new strikes.

Military assets are moving into the region in anticipation of possible action. A third U.S. aircraft carrier and thousands of additional troops are currently making their way to the area. Before joining the Joint Staff, Sylvia commanded the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He held that post until May 2025. He also previously served as the vice director for the J5. His official biography, which detailed this background, has been taken offline.

Sylvia is the latest of nearly two dozen military leaders to depart under Hegseth. This group includes generals, admirals, civilian secretaries for the Army and Navy, and other top uniformed officers. The Pentagon has not publicly explained almost any of these departures. The Pentagon did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment late Wednesday. Hegseth said last month that he ordered the military to double the cuts to the overall number of top officers. The goal is a 20% decrease to be completed by Jan. 1, 2027. There are currently roughly 800 flag and general officer positions.

Hegseth described the reductions as a necessary measure during a speech on Sept. 30. He told junior officers and enlisted leaders at Marine Corps Base Quantico that he calls the cuts accountability and long overdue. Some members of Congress have criticized the reduction in the ranks of generals. They describe the action as a purge that will take years to rebuild. Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., a former Navy combat pilot, said last month that Hegseth has a deep-seated grievance about leadership in the military. Kelly stated that the administration is purging a generation of great leaders. He added that it will take a generation to recover from the losses.

The J5 director and their staff typically generate and coordinate military plans. They work directly with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs and the president. The departure of the current director leaves a vacancy in a key planning role during a period of active conflict. The lack of a stated reason for Sylvia's firing follows the pattern of previous departures. The Pentagon's silence on the matter continues as it manages the transition of leadership and prepares for potential operations in the Middle East.
