Residents of the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky will pause fighting starting Thursday, Oct. 29. The six-day halt allows humanitarian aid to enter the city and enables civilian evacuation. Melania Trump’s office announced the arrangement on Friday, attributing the deal directly to the first lady rather than President Donald Trump.
The first lady’s office states that Trump acted as an exclusive intermediary in the negotiations. She worked directly with leadership in both Moscow and Kyiv to define the ceasefire terms. This includes the timing, technical procedures, and processes for the pause. Ukrainian officials confirmed that a tentative agreement was reached for the occupied territory, though neither country has issued a detailed public response.
Aid teams from both nations will visit homes to assess civilian needs. The office described the situation in Oleshky as dire, noting that the remaining population consists mostly of elderly residents. These individuals require medical attention, food, and clean water. Trump stated that residents face mined roads, regular attacks, and limited electricity. She said that without this intervention, bringing in aid and evacuating the elderly would have been impossible.
Civilian leaders will coordinate transportation for those wishing to leave the city. Trump noted that some residents will choose to go to Russia, while others will head to Ukraine. Newsmax, a conservative American media outlet, has agreed to document the work of the aid teams. White House communications director Steven Cheung called the development amazing news on X, describing it as a major positive step toward peace.
The announcement follows a recent phone call between Pope Leo and President Vladimir Putin, during which the pope expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis. Trump’s office also noted that the first lady has helped reunite 34 children with their families after their forced removal by Russia.
This localized truce occurs while broader peace efforts by the Trump administration have stalled. President Trump has recently expressed frustration with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, suggesting Ukraine needs new leadership. He told reporters earlier this week that Russia has been fine on Ukraine, claiming they have not been doing much.
