Cuyahoga Falls will formally open its new RiverLoop on Saturday, Oct. 24, connecting the Cuyahoga River to local businesses along Front Street. The grand opening runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Downtown Pavilion and Plaza at 2085 Front Street. Mayor Don Walters will lead an official tour of the route at noon.
The project cost $7.1 million and took more than a year to complete. Crews rebuilt the lower wooden boardwalk beside the water, installing a new foundation and new boards. Above that level, a wider concrete walkway now serves visitors. The path is ADA accessible and links the riverfront to the commercial corridor.
The route includes scenic overlooks, public art, and a stage facing the river. Colorful artwork and built-in seating surround the stage area. Walters described the space as previously underutilized. He said the stage holds well over 100 people and offers a perfect backdrop.
Ten points of interest along the loop feature QR codes. These codes provide information on local wildlife, including bald eagles and river otters, and the history of the Cuyahoga River. Walters noted that many people do not realize the water flows to Niagara Falls and the Atlantic Ocean.
Local merchants are monitoring the new foot traffic. Nathan Walden, owner of Hope Soap, a shop located on Front Street, said the store makes all products by hand using natural ingredients. He believes the RiverLoop will draw more visitors to the area. Walden said the project is going to be a game-changer for the neighborhood.
The celebration will include guest speakers who will explain the history behind specific project features. Members of the architectural and construction teams, along with city staff, will attend. Light refreshments will be available. Walters plans to officiate a wedding at a venue within the RiverLoop during the event.
Walters said the attraction is not seasonal. He stated that people can enjoy the space year-round. Visitors can pick up a map at the Downtown Pavilion and Plaza to join the tour or explore the route independently.
