A judge in Topeka, Kansas, set a $3 million bond for Adam Schwegman following his first court appearance on Thursday, Oct. 29. Schwegman was arrested in connection with a one-hour crime spree that police say resulted in three stabbings and a rape allegation.
Topeka police state that the incident began around an hour before witnesses encountered Schwegman near Ward Meade Park. During that initial period, Schwegman allegedly stabbed two people along S.W. Fillmore. His booking charges include a separate allegation of rape at that same address.
The suspect then moved up the same road, where police say he broke into two homes. Four children were inside one of the residences, including an infant four months old. Officials confirmed that none of the children were injured during the break-ins.
Schwegman’s actions continued on a nearby street, where a third victim was stabbed. The sequence of events concluded at Ward Meade Park, where Schwegman attacked a 70-year-old woman. The victim sustained injuries during the confrontation at the park.
Ron Hubbard, a bystander, said he was with a friend when he noticed Schwegman acting strangely while the suspect was running from the park. Hubbard described spotting the man after he had been up at the park. Hubbard said he threw his leg out to trip Schwegman, causing the suspect to fall into the grass. The knife dropped during the fall, and Hubbard kicked it onto the sidewalk while his friend held Schwegman.
Schwegman escaped the group briefly but was soon caught by police. He was booked on 16 charges, which include aggravated battery and rape. Hubbard said he was glad to intervene to prevent further harm, adding that he wished they could have stopped the situation before it began.
The suspect’s court appearance took place the day after the incident. The $3 million bond was set by the judge to secure his release from custody while he awaits trial.
